Crain's Editorial: Keep It Going

In an editorial about the positive changes in downtown Cleveland, which is leading to more visitors to the city, Destination Cleveland President said that while having the Republican National Convention held in the city last summer, it was ABA's Annual Meeting & Marketplace that leaves a lasting impression on future visits.
"Much as we enjoyed having politicians and lobbyists roaming (and spending) downtown last summer, we'll take many more repeats of gatherings like the American Bus Association convention, which brought 800 bus-tour operators to the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland in January and left an influential group — people who decide which places thousands of U.S. travelers will visit in the next couple of years — with a favorable view of the city."
It's those kind of events that helped Destination Cleveland post a 2.8% increase in the number of hotel rooms booked last year, topping the U.S. average of 1.7%. And more of those events will be needed to sustain the strength of a downtown hotel market that added about 1,000 rooms last year — huge by the city's standards.
