Breaking Down Bias: Tackling Microaggressions, Implicit Bias, and Stereotypes in Transportation

Creating an inclusive environment requires understanding and addressing subtle biases in everyday interactions. This webinar will focus on microaggressions, implicit bias, and stereotypes within Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) in the motorcoach, group tour, and travel association industry.
Participants will learn to recognize and address microaggressions—small, often unintentional slights that impact marginalized groups. We’ll explore implicit bias and the unconscious attitudes that influence our behavior and discuss how stereotypes perpetuate inequity.
We will examine how these biases can manifest in the motorcoach and group tour industry, such as through unequal treatment of staff and passengers, culturally insensitive marketing, and assumptions about customer preferences. Through real-world examples and interactive discussions, attendees will gain practical tools to combat these issues and foster an inclusive culture.
By the end of the webinar, you’ll be equipped to identify and challenge microaggressions, implicit biases, and stereotypes, helping to create a more equitable and welcoming environment for all employees and customers in the transportation industry.
Speaker
Carolyn Ross, MD, MPH, CEDS
Carolyn Coker Ross, MD, MPH, CEDS, is an African American author, speaker, and expert in the treatment of eating disorders, trauma, and addictions. Dr. Ross is a graduate of The University of Michigan Medical School. She completed a residency in Preventive Medicine and a Master’s in Public Health (MPH) at Loma Linda University and a fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona. She is board-certified in Preventive Medicine and Addiction Medicine. Dr. Ross also completed the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion certification from Cornell University.
Dr. Ross has been an international speaker and consultant on mental health, trauma, and workplace productivity issues. In 2022, Friendly House Los Angeles awarded her an Outstanding Service in Addiction Medicine award, and in 2023, the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers (NAATP) awarded her the Dr. Peter Hayden Diversity, Inclusivity, and Racial Equity Award.
Dr. Ross presented a TEDxPleasantGrove talk on “Historical and Intergenerational Trauma in January 2020. She founded Inclusive Minds Consultants, which offers training to organizations on making workplace culture more productive and trauma-sensitive. She is a co-editor of Antiblackness and the Stories of Authentic Allies: Lived Experiences in the Fight Against Institutionalized Racism, released in June 2024 by Oxford University Press).
